Хотя Нью-Йорское метро считается вторым старейшим в мире (после Лондонского) и ведёт свой отчёт с 1868 года, подземка в этом городе появилась лишь в 1904 году, после Будапешта и Парижа. До этого все линии были только эстакадными.
На сайте dailymail.co.uk помещён интересный фоторепортаж о строительстве первой подземной линии на Манхэттене в 1901-1904 гг., а также некоторых последующих линии  из Муниципального архива Нью-Йорка.
